Kellogg’s celebrates 50 year history with rice farmers in Griffith
Apr 19, 2012
Kellogg’s representatives visited the Griffith region in NSW to celebrate a milestone 50-year relationship with rice growers, the Morshead family, who have been growing and supplying rice to Kellogg’s for three generations.
After a tough month of flooding, challenging harvesting conditions and weeks of delay due to the unprecedented amount of rainfall the region saw, the family finally began to harvest their rice crop only a few weeks ago. The rice harvested will be turned into the iconic and much loved cereal, Kellogg’s Rice Bubbles.
Representatives from Kellogg’s, the cereal manufacturer which proudly uses 100 per cent Australian grown grains, visited the Morshead property together with SunRice representative, Mike Hedditch, and presented the family with a commemorative plaque to officially mark 50 years of working together.
The Morshead family have been supplying rice to Kellogg’s through SunRice across three generations, from grandfather Bill, to father Harry and his son Chris. Chris and his wife Kate have three children of their own and are keen to continue the strong relationship with the cereal company for years to come.
“We need support from companies such as SunRice and Kellogg’s to continue to do what we do for generations to come. We’re proud to grow rice in this country, on this land, and we’re proud that there are a lot of people who support buying products that are Australian grown and Australian made,” said Chris.
Kellogg’s sources 8000 tonnes of whole rice each year from local Australian farmers, such as the Morsheads.
Raquel Epstein, procurement manager for Kellogg’s said, “It’s a special time for Kellogg’s as we celebrate and recognise those farming families who have been supplying quality Australian grown grains to the company for generations.
Last month we also celebrated two corn growing families in the Toowoomba region who have been supplying to Kellogg’s for more than half a century, and recently we recognised the Morshead family. It’s just our small way of saying thank you to these families. If there are more Aussie farmers out there who have had a long history with Kellogg’s we’d love to hear from you.”
Kellogg Australia also donated 2,000 boxes of breakfast cereal (or 20,000 serves) to the Griffith Flood Recovery Centre last month.
